Description
This form of the Beautiful-leaved Sonerila originates from the southern Thai province of Phang Nga. Belonging to the Melastomataceae family, Sonerila species are relatively small, herbaceous plants native to the shaded forests of tropical Asia. Due to their beautifully coloured and patterned foliage, they are aptly referred to as the "jewels of the forest floor". In the wild, Sonerila calophylla grows in locations with a very humid microclimate, such as shaded rocks near waterfalls. It has a bushy growth habit, reaching a height of around 20 to 30 cm. In the 'Phang Nga' selection, the oval, velvety-glossy leaves, measuring approximately 3 to 9 cm in length, feature a spectacular silvery-white dotted pattern that contrasts starkly against the dark green, sometimes reddish-tinged base colour.
With its high humidity requirement of 60 to 90%, Sonerila calophylla 'Phang Nga' is ideal for rainforest terrariums and closed bottle gardens at temperatures of around 18 to 28 °C. The loose, well-draining Substrate — such as commercially available soil for tropical terrariums — should always be kept moist, preferably using soft water. However, waterlogging must be strictly avoided, as it will cause the roots to rot. Very long stems tend to become bare at the base and lie down on the ground, where they will take root anew. Occasional pruning helps to keep the plant compact and bushy.
With its striking silvery dotted pattern, this Sonerila adds sparkling accents to rainforest terrariums. It is exceptionally well-suited for naturalistically staging shaded zones. When combined with mosses, ferns, and dark rocks or driftwood, it creates a deep, high-contrast effect that perfectly completes the illusion of an untouched jungle floor.
