Decorative Stones for Your Aquarium and Aquascape

In aquascaping, stones are an important part of the hardscape, i.e. the solid decoration in an aquarium. There are very purist designs based on Japanese principles, called Iwagumi, which use only one type of stone and no driftwood in addition to aquatic plants. In our online shop, we offer many different types of stone that are suitable for use in aquariums. The price is usually per kilogram. To help you calculate the right amount of stones for setting up or designing an aquarium layout, we've written the article Choosing hardscape by weight in our Aquascaping Wiki. The calculation takes into account the individual weight and volume parameters of each type of stone.

In general, when choosing stones for an aquarium, you should distinguish between water-neutral and hardening stones. Types such as Lava, Dragon Stone (Ohko Stone) and Loa Rocks are considered water-neutral, as are most of the stone types offered by the manufacturer ADA. These include Manten Stones, Unzan, Koke, Sansui, Kei and Yamaya Stones. A small note on this: ADA stone types are offered in 25 kg packs, and we even offer Unzan Stones in our shop as individually photographed one-of-a-kind pieces.

Stone types that harden the aquarium water contain lime. These components can sometimes be seen as whitish veins in the stone. Hardening, i.e. an increase in general hardness, carbonate hardness and pH value, occurs mainly when a CO2 system is used on the aquarium. Injecting the gas produces small amounts of carbonic acid, which continuously dissolves the lime from the rock. To counteract the hardening, we recommend regular, larger water changes with very soft or even fully demineralized water, or simply using non-hardening types of rock. This is especially advisable if you want to keep sensitive dwarf shrimp such as bee shrimp in your aquarium. They don't cope well with the fluctuations in water hardness that would inevitably occur during a water change.

Heavily rugged stone types in particular, which are popular in aquascaping for creating mountain-like structures, are often calcareous. These include Seiryu stones (Mini Landscape), but also Grey Rocks, Frodo Stones, Black Pagoda and Tsingy Rocks.

You can find a complete overview of all the types of stone you can buy online in our shop in the article "Hardscape" in the Aquascaping Wiki. All stone types are listed there and described separately as water-neutral and hardening types.
