Fluval - Substrates
Quite literally, one of the weightiest components in the aquarium hobby is the substrate. After all, a riverbed or the ocean floor isn't made of glass either. Riverbeds usually consist of a mix of sand, gravel, various rocks and mulm. Modern substrates are modeled on the substrate of natural environments and no longer serve purely decorative purposes. A clever combination of components enables optimal water flow through the substrate, which leads to a healthy microfauna, healthy aquarium plants and healthy fish. The Fluval Stratum substrates in our aquarium online shop perform several tasks in the aquarium. On the one hand, plants can root really well in the substrate; on the other hand, the soil, made of fired Japanese clay, can provide nutrients and minerals, regulate the pH of the aquarium water and buffer it for more sensitive aquarium inhabitants. Another advantage is that beneficial bacteria settle optimally on the surface and contribute to nitrification and the breakdown of pollutants.
