The biOrb Air 60 is a new terrarium for keeping exotic plants in a unique design. All important components are already installed in this product, and it is also very easy to handle. In this article we present the biOrb in a bit more detail.
What can the biOrb Air 60 do?
The biOrb Air 60 from Oase is a unique terrarium for keeping tropical plants in a special spherical shape. The special design and the technology integrated into the lid and base, such as terrarium lighting, fan and mister, stand out in a particularly positive way. The spherical shape blends skillfully into any living room ambiance. All processes can be automated conveniently, and a complete 24-hour daily cycle greatly simplifies handling and operation. This leaves more time for enjoying the plant world thriving in the biOrb Air 60!
The sphere is made of high-quality acrylic glass and has a volume of 60 liters. Lid and base are available in either white or gray.

Lighting of the biOrb
The LED lighting built into the lid has a power consumption of 4.2 watts and delivers a luminous flux of 726 lumens. A complete 24-hour daylight curve is preset in the control unit of the biOrb. The start time can be set individually. The cycle includes a soft start (sunrise) and a soft ending (sunset), each lasting 30 minutes. Furthermore, the terrarium lamp of the biOrb also serves as a signal LED that indicates malfunctions or necessary maintenance work with the help of light pulses. In setting mode, the lamp serves to display the status and to communicate with the terrarium owner.
Humidification and ventilation in the biOrb
A fan and an ultrasonic mister including a water reservoir are also built into the lid. If you open the lid, for example for maintenance work, the technical components stop operating automatically. The fan, which draws in the air from outside, is equipped with a corresponding activated carbon air filter (see picture).

Both the ventilation and the humidification by mister can each be set to three different intensities. Which degree of air circulation and humidification is necessary depends primarily on the plants, their requirements and the plant mass. With the various setting options of the biOrb, however, you can adapt the sphere excellently to any individual situation.
The reservoir for the mister should preferably be filled solely with Oase HumidiMist. This is specially demineralized water, so that no or only very few limescale residues can form on the glass. It is also enriched with electrolytes in order to trigger the built-in humidity sensor of the biOrb in case of too low humidity.
Setting up the biOrb
To ensure the necessary moisture in the soil of this terrarium as well, the biOrb has a collection tray for liquid in the lower part. You can check the water level via a small indicator tube and even carry out a water change through it. To distribute the moisture well in the substrate and maintain it, the base plate in the biOrb is lined with a so-called capillary mat.

This green mat not only serves to regulate moisture but also separates the water reservoir underneath from the actual substrate, which is added over the capillary mat during setup.
As a substrate, Oase offers suitable coconut fiber compost. It is delivered dry and pressed into a square shape and should first be pre-soaked for several hours before use in the terrarium. This also makes it increase significantly in volume, since it can absorb and store water excellently. Afterward the substrate can be added into the sphere of the biOrb.
Suitable terrarium plants or emersed aquarium plants are now planted into the coconut substrate. Of course, suitable natural decorative materials such as stones or driftwood can also be used to set up the spherical terrarium. Especially for this purpose, the manufacturer Oase also offers decorative wood made of synthetic resin, which looks very natural and has the advantage of easy care.
