Biological filter media serve as an optimized colonization surface for beneficial bacteria that break down pollutants inside an aquarium filter. Bacteria such as Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter convert potentially harmful ammonia and nitrite into the much less dangerous nitrate, which is then taken up by the plants and thus returns to the nutrient cycle. This process is also known as the nitrogen cycle. As a rule, biological filter materials are highly porous to offer the bacteria a maximum surface area for colonization.
