Description

South-American frogbit is a popular floating plant for aquaria that is rather undemanding and grows fast. Its round smooth leaves are attractive in open tanks, the long roots bring a very natural, primeval feel to the aquarium. Limnobium laevigatum is especially suitable for fish and shrimp breeding tanks, as it removes surplus nutrients from the water very efficiently.

Characteristics

Distribution map of Limnobium laevigatum

Limnobium laevigatum, Amazon frogbit, is a floating plant that looks a bit like a very large duckweed. It is native to lakes, ponds and slow-flowing rivers in all of Central and South America.
Compared with the North American frogbit species Limnobium spongia, which is only rarely cultivated in aquaria these days, it is much more adaptable especially regarding temperature. Common frogbit (Hydrocharis morsus-ranae), native to Europe and Western Asia, is hardy and thus a great pond plant. It hibernatives in the form of winter buds (turions), and, other than Limnobium laevigatum, it is possibly not apt to live in a tropical tank in the long run.

The growth habit of the Amazon frogbit is comparable to other floating plants. The floating rosette forms runners regularly, at whose ends young plants grow. ()

Does Limnobium laevigatum also work under a glass cover?

Limnobium laevigatum should not be kept under a glass cover. Floating plants react sensitively to water from above, e.g. condensation from a glass cover.

Is frogbit suitable for a beginner Neo Caridina tank that is also supposed to have mosses and Limnophila sessiliflora?

Limnobium laevigatum is quite undemanding and therefore also well suited to a beginner project. However, it can't tolerate water from above, so no aquarium cover should be used.

Hello, the plants grow quickly and well, but it bothers me that the roots get so long and I have to cut them every week. Do you have another floating plant where that isn't the case and which is otherwise uncomplicated? Thanks!

There are also floating plants that develop much shorter roots. For example, various Salvinia species or Phyllanthus fluitans. The only important thing is that no condensation drips onto the leaves if you use a glass cover.
