Have you tried everything to get rid of the algae in your aquarium? In the case of a widespread and stubborn infestation in a planted aquarium, a treatment with AlgExit can be considered as an emergency measure. However, it is important to stress that long-term use of this product can impair the microbiological balance of the aquarium. In addition, some sensitive aquatic plant species react to the active ingredient with growth disorders or visible damage. Nerite snails and antler snails should be removed as a precaution before the treatment begins, since they can be particularly sensitive to the product. A full treatment with AlgExit should therefore be carried out only as a last resort in the case of heavy algae infestation.
What is an AlgExit treatment?
![AlgExit]()
AlgExit is a specially developed anti-algae agent that works against the most common algae species in the freshwater aquarium – including green algae such as thread algae or the stubborn Cladophora sp., black beard algae, beard algae and cyanobacteria.
A typical AlgExit treatment runs over 4 weeks. Once a week, 10 ml of AlgExit is added per 100 l of aquarium water. Before use, the filter should be cleaned and the lighting optimized. This means taking more account of the biomass and plant species and reducing the lighting period or intensity if green algae are spreading too much. You can find more tips on this in our article "Lighting period in the aquarium".
During the treatment, UV clarifiers and ozonizers must be switched off, as they can neutralize the effect. Good water circulation supports even distribution of the active ingredient.
Already after the first applications, the first declines in algae become visible. The treatment should be carried out consistently over the entire period in order to kill spores and invisible remnants as well. As a follow-up treatment, a repetition after a few weeks may be necessary in the case of heavy algae infestation.
When an AlgExit treatment makes sense
Algae often arise from nutrient imbalances, lighting that is too strong or a lack of maintenance. These causes should therefore be eliminated or optimized first. To remove algae, gentler measures are suitable at first, such as the blackout treatment, a treatment with Easy Carbo or hydrogen peroxide. Only when these methods do not work can you consider using AlgExit. As an absolute last resort, AlgExit can help to alleviate the problem quickly – but the causes should be fixed as well, to prevent a renewed outbreak. This includes: regular water changes, balanced fertilization, reducing excess food, and sufficient planting.
Cladophora sp. and other stubborn algae

For very stubborn and wiry green algae such as Cladophora sp., a longer treatment and follow-up treatment may be necessary to push them back successfully. Please note that with a longer treatment, any negative effects on invertebrates, aquatic plants and the bacterial environment in the aquarium are also correspondingly amplified.
The Cladophora alga can be pushed back significantly by the treatment so that it disappears visually – but it is not completely eliminated. Traces of the alga remain latent in the system. If plants or decoration materials are subsequently transferred to another aquarium, this can lead to transmission and a renewed outbreak.
