In addition to its proven filter bag "The Bag", the American manufacturer Seachem has released two more models called Zip Bag and Zip Bag Large. These new containers are equipped with a corrosion-resistant zipper. The aquarist thus gets a very practical filter bag that is easy to reseal and reuse. We explain the exact differences here in this article.
The Bag
![Seachem - The Bag - filter bag]()
The well-known and proven filter bag called The Bag from Seachem is an extremely fine-meshed filter bag made of polyethylene with a mesh size of 180 micrometers. It is therefore suitable for very small filter material. The seams are also welded, and the entire bag is resistant to chlorine and acid. This makes it ideal for using Seachem Purigen, which consists of very small beads. You can simply regenerate this filter medium, bag and all, in a bath of chlorine bleach. Normal filter bags would be attacked and damaged by the chlorine, but The Bag survives the procedure without problems. The Bag is tied shut with a supplied plastic cable tie, which is resealable. The bag can of course also be used for all other kinds of filter materials and measures 13 x 25.5 cm.
Zip Bag
![Seachem - Zip Bag - filter bag]()
New in the range is the Zip Bag, a filter bag that can be resealed again and again with a practical zipper. It is corrosion-resistant and can therefore be used underwater without any problems. The material is PVC, and the seams are sewn. The mesh size is somewhat larger than with The Bag, so very fine filter media such as Purigen or resin should not be used with the Zip Bag. Here The Bag is still the better choice. The Zip Bag is well suited for biological filter media such as Matrix, but also for chemical filter materials such as activated carbon, De Nitrate or Phosguard. The Zip Bag can hold about one liter in total and measures 32 x 14 cm. It is available as Zip Bag S and Zip Bag M, which differ only in mesh size.
Zip Bag Large
![Seachem - Large Zip Bag - filter bag]()
The Zip Bag Large is the big brother of the Zip Bag. At 48 x 43 cm, the dimensions are considerably more voluminous, and the filter bag can hold up to 18 l of contents. It is therefore ideal for use in large aquariums. Since the mesh size here is again significantly coarser, only larger filter material is suitable for use in the Zip Bag Large, in particular biological filter media such as Matrix. Otherwise, the Zip Bag Large is very similar to the Zip Bag in terms of material and features, that is, it has PVC as its base material and a corrosion-resistant zipper for resealing.
With these three different filter bags, Seachem now offers the right product for very different needs, filter materials and also aquarium sizes. All models are characterized by their durability and robustness.
