JBL - Algae Control

Algae in the aquarium are a real nuisance and can drive even experienced aquarists to despair. There are various types of algae, such as green algae, diatoms, red algae and blue-green algae – although the latter are not actually algae at all, but cyanobacteria. An algae outbreak always indicates an ecological imbalance in the aquarium, caused for example by an excessive organic load or an unbalanced supply of nutrients. The most important aspect of algae control is to identify and eliminate the cause. In our guide "Algae in the Aquarium" in the Aquascaping Wiki, we have compiled lots of helpful advice on this major topic in the aquarium hobby. Alongside investigating the cause, you should of course also take effective immediate action so that an algae outbreak does not turn into a full-blown algae plague. Natural, biological algae control also includes, for example, using suitable algae eaters in sufficient numbers. If this is not possible due to the size of the aquarium, or if the measures you have taken against the algae plague do not work, you can turn to an anti-algae treatment as a last resort. JBL offers Algol, an effective product indicated against all types of algae. As a rule, when used correctly, treating the aquarium with Algol has no negative effects on fish and microorganisms; in individual cases, however, adverse effects on freshwater shrimp, mosses and other aquatic plants cannot be completely ruled out.
