Description

Schismatoglottis roseospatha is a remarkable Aroid from the southern part of Sarawak on Borneo. It is a rheophyte, attached on rock along fast-flowing rainforest streams, comparable to the related Bucephalandra species. Although it is only temporarily flooded during high water level in the nature, it thrives well as constantly submerged aquarium plant. The narrowly ovate to lanceolate, dark green, somewhat glossy leaves have a slightly crispate margin and long tip. The creeping rhizome has quite long roots. Young leaf stalks and rhizome tips are red-brown. The stomata on the leaf surface appear under water as silvery spots. The leaf size is very variable depending on conditions and age of the plant. Although Schismatoglottis roseospatha is known to the hobby for years, it is still rarely available in trade.

This plant is not demanding but benefits from good CO2 and nutrient supply. It attaches itself to rock by its roots but can also be fixed to the botton (do not bury the rhizome!), or simply stuffed into the crevices of the hardscape. With time, the very slow growth may accelerate, and the very small plant increases in size.

With its narrow, shiny, dark green leaves, this little known plant is very interesting for the aquarium design, for example in stream biotope tanks.

Schismatoglottis roseospatha grows on the banks of rivers and rivulets in the forests of the Malaysian part of Borneo (Sarawak), where this so-called rheophyte withstands strong currents during high water. It forms creeping rhizomes that attach to rocks with the help of their roots, comparable to its relative, Bucephalandra motleyana that is also found on Borneo, and the West-African plant Anubias barteri.
S. roseospatha is not very well-known in the aquarium hobby yet, and it is only available from fellow hobbyists, not in trade. However, this plant was collected as early as in the 1970s by German hobbyists; later on (1988) this species was scientifically described by Josef Bogner.

S. roseospatha has narrow oval to narrow lanceolate dark green slightly shining leaves whose margin is finely undulate. They taper off into the leaf tip bit by bit, their stalks are reddish-brown. (read more)

Schismatoglottis roseospatha - in Vitro

There were many plants in the pot, they've meanwhile taken root well, and I had zero losses. At this quality I'd buy again.

Top schöne Pflänzchen

Waren viele Pflanzen im Topf, sind mittlerweile auch gut angewachsen und hatte null Ausfall. Würde ich bei dieser Qualität wieder kaufen.

Really an eye-catcher, unusual shape. The plant isn't particularly large, but has everything it needs to grow. (read more)
