Terrarium plants - Marsh plants - Let your terrarium go green!
Wet and flooded soil often contains hardly any oxygen, but plant roots need it for respiration, otherwise they die. That's why many land plants perish in soil that is too wet. Typical marsh and aquatic plants are adapted to this because they have a system of air channels (aerenchyma) that carries oxygen all the way to the roots.
Most aquarium plants that grow both emersed and submerged can be counted as marsh plants, and you can use them in their emersed form in paludariums and aquaterrariums. There are also many marsh plants that cannot be kept underwater, such as the umbrella papyrus (Cyperus alternifolius) or sessile joyweed (Alternanthera sessilis).
