Description
This North-American Gratiola species is one of the most interesting new aquarium plants. It is still very rare in Europe. It is related to the European Gratiola officinalis, however, it differs very much from it. This delicate stem plant has a compact growth habit, forming dense, flattish-wide light green cushions in the tank.

Leaf structure of the submerged leaves
The small, narrow, decussate leaves have a sharp point, which gives the plant a somewhat prickly texture. The shoots have thick rigid stems and grow to a width of only 1.5 to 2 cm. They can reach a height of over 20 cm, however, they can be kept lower by regular trimming.
Gratiola viscidula should be planted in a bright place. It is a rather slow grower. According to our experience it is rather robust. G. viscidula is probably suitable for cold-water tanks, as it comes from a temperate climate.
Gratiola viscidula is one of about seventeen North American Gratiola (hedge hyssop) species. The European hedge hyssop (G. officinalis) belongs to the same genus. G. viscidula is distributed in the eastern USA from Florida north to Ohio and west to Missouri. In nature, G. viscidula is a perennial marsh plant that develops a rhizome. It grows in various wet, sunny to semi-shaded places such as stream banks, ditches, ponds and swamps and flowers from June to October.
Under water, the sticky hedge hyssop forms compact cushions and lawns of small, thick-stemmed shoots. The light green, rigid, small submersed leaves taper to a point. The submersed form of G. viscidula has an interesting "prickly" texture.
Gratiola viscidula is still a novelty as an aquarium plant and one of the very first Gratiola species in the aquarium hobby. (read more)

Very curious how the plant copes with the transition to submersed and looking forward to a "spiky bush" for my scape.
