Description

A foliose liverwort found in the same place as Bucephalandra motleyana "Gunung Sumpit" on the island of Borneo. We think it may belong to the species Solenostoma tetragonum (synonym: Jungermannia tetragona), a liverwort largely distributed in the Asian tropics that is found in moist places.

Submers

The roundish leaflets of the liverwort Solenostoma tetragonum

This slow-growing moss forms nice cushions from its ascending shoots with a very dense foliage with round leaflets. A single shoot is approx. 3 mm wide. Medium light, CO2 injection and a regular nutrient supply through the water are recommendable for this relatively demanding moss.

Solenostoma tetragonum is a foliose (= leafy) liverwort that is widespread in tropical-subtropical Asia and occurs in various moist habitats. It has also been counted in Jungermannia and looks outwardly very similar to many other liverwort species from the genera Solenostoma and Jungermannia.

A striking feature of Solenostoma tetragonum can be seen even at low magnification: the roundish, transparent leaves are dotted with opaque specks. These are so-called oil bodies, which are located in the leaf cells. In S. tetragonum, cells with one large oil body each are scattered among many cells without oil bodies. Many other Solenostoma and Jungermannia species have several smaller oil bodies per cell.1

What is the best way to attach it, and how quickly does it attach itself? Is it a problem if some of the gel substrate stays on it?

We recommend tying the moss to hardscape. We also have a helpful article about this in our wiki: https://www.aquasabi.de/aquascaping-wiki_aquascaping_aquarium-moos-aufbinden. However, the tying has to be redone from time to time, since larger cushions detach after a while. Alternatively, moss grids can also be used: a moss grid is suitable here. https://www.aquasabi.de/Aquasabi-Keramik-Moos-Pad-mit-Edelstahlgitter The nutrient gel should be removed completely, since otherwise bacterial films can form.

I blended the moss with soil, spread it evenly on small lava rocks and kept it in a dry start in a mini tank for 3 weeks. It took hold very evenly, rather slowly but steadily. (read more)

2 Wochen passierte gar nix.
