Description

Limnophila aromatica is a highly variable species that grows as a marsh plant in wetlands from India to Japan and Australia. In parts of Southeast Asia, it is also used as a culinary herb ("Rice paddy herb"). Our plant is one of several forms of Limnophila aromatica commonly cultivated for the aquarium hobby. It is a large, attractive stem plant with narrow leaves arranged in whorls. Depending on the light intensity, the submerged leaves range from light or medium green to reddish, with purple to reddish-violet undersides. Compared with the closely related Limnophila hippuridoides, L. aromatica has fewer leaves per whorl, a thicker stem and a larger shoot diameter under the same growing conditions. As a result, it has a somewhat more robust appearance. Its colouration is also generally more subdued, remaining predominantly light green with reddish-violet highlights under moderate lighting.

The plants are often cultivated and supplied in their emersed form. At this stage, the leaves are predominantly green. Only after adapting to submerged growth do they develop the characteristic underwater shoots with their more intense colours and distinctive growth habit.

Strong lighting, together with a good supply of CO2 and nutrients, is recommended for the best colouration and compact growth. Soft to moderately hard water is suitable, and temperatures between about 22 and 28 °C are ideal. Propagation is straightforward by means of top and side shoot cuttings.

Reaching a height of around 30 to 60 cm, Limnophila aromatica is particularly well suited to the midground or background of larger aquariums. Its sturdy, upright shoots and the attractive contrast between the green upper leaf surfaces and the purple undersides make it a striking focal point that also combines beautifully with fine-leaved stem plants.

When hobbyists talk about Limnophila aromatica, they usually indeed mean L. hippuridoides, originating from the Malayan peninsula. This plant, often wrongly called "L. hippuroides", has a significantly larger number of leaves per whorl than L. aromatica (6 to 8, sometimes even more). When under strong lights, it is of an intensive, beautiful deep red, with pink leaf undersides.
The real Limnophila aromatica, however, is not very widely spread in the aquarium hobby and its habit and looks are less striking than those of L. hippuridoides. In its submersed form, it has 2-3(-4?) leaves per node. It is a very variable species, there are green forms and those with different reddish hues. As its scientific name suggests, its leaves have a more or less aromatic scent when crushed, as they contain essential oils (most prominently, limonene). (read more)

After I ordered only a few weeks ago and my in vitro unfortunately melted away, I have now ordered again. The potted plant has grown very nicely. (read more)

Wunderbarer Wuchs

Habe mich wirklich sehr gefreut.

The plants arrived at my place well packed. There were about 8 healthy cuttings in the pot. Now, after 4 weeks, the first new leaves are showing. (read more)

gesunde Pflanzen
