Description
Nymphoides sp. 'Taiwan' is an unidentified Floating Heart species from southern Taiwan. It is also called Nymphoides sp. "Flipper" and "Flipper lotus". Whereas other species from the genus Nymphoides soon grow floating leaves, N. sp. 'Taiwan' keeps sprouting submersed leaves. These are of a bright green colour and somewhat transparent. The plant can quickly reach a height and width of 25 cm in the aquarium and grow to a maximum height of about 60 cm. It grows so fast that regular thinning of the leaves is necessary so that other plants are not shaded too much. When doing so, you remove the oldest leaves with the longest stalks. The plant reproduces by producing adventitious plants growing on the leaf stalk shortly under the leaf blade. For propagation, you simply cut off the leaves with the leaf stalk and let them float in the water.
Nymphoides sp. 'Taiwan' ('Flipper') is a floating heart introduced from southern Taiwan in 1994 whose species is regarded in the trade as unresolved; a DNA analysis points to N. cristata, and the specialist literature lists it as N. cristata “Taiwan”.12 In the aquarium it produces almost exclusively kidney-shaped, light green and slightly translucent submersed leaves.12 The rosette can quickly reach 25 cm in height and width; according to the specialist literature floating leaves are absent in the aquarium, yet hobbyists report large floating leaves on stalks 50–60 cm long on older plants.
