Questions and answers about Oase - ScaperLine Soil - black

You have questions about this product? Ask other customer or our support team about this product!

I'd like to use the soil only as a filter material, as a test. Is it heavily pre-fertilized, or which nutrients does the soil absorb until it is saturated? Thank you in advance.

Soil can generally be used as filter material. However, always keep in mind that soils for planted aquariums also release larger amounts of ammonium in the beginning, which leads to an elevated nitrite level or, in the worst case at too high a pH, is converted to ammonia. Both nitrite and ammonia would not be beneficial for the aquarium stock and can even lead to the death of animals. The advantages as a filter medium are the temporary water-softening effect and the large surface area for bacteria to colonize. The soil should always be placed in the filter in a filter bag. However, since soil does not stay permanently stable in shape, there can also be increased particle discharge from the external filter, which then causes cloudy water. Soils can not only release nutrients but in some cases also bind them in large amounts. Micronutrients and other cations (potassium, calcium, magnesium) in particular are bound by soils. With some soils (primarily unfertilized soils for shrimp tanks), increased binding of phosphate can also occur. All in all, we would not recommend using it in an external filter, since uncontrollable changes in water parameters are to be expected. A reduction of water hardness can be achieved much more easily with, e.g., a reverse osmosis system, which would also always provide constant conditions. The release of humic substances and fulvic acids from the soil would be a positive property, but this can also be done in a more controllable way with appropriate products.
