Description

The Tropica Aquarium Soil is burned from valuable clays and ensures good and active growth of the plants right from the beginning. The positive nutrient balance has a particularly beneficial effect on the development of reddish nuances in the plants. Tropica Aquarium Soil is a complete substrate that can be used without any further supplements. In addition, this Soil is an active substrate that slightly lowers the pH and has a weak influence on the chemistry of the water. It is therefore also ideally suited for shrimp tanks.

As this is a natural product, it may contain varying amounts of silicates. It is recommended to perform at least two water changes per week during the first three weeks after the aquarium has been newly set up.

How long does the soil last in the aquarium? I've had the Aquasabi soil for 1 1/2 years and unfortunately my plants keep growing worse despite NPK fertilization and CO2! Do I have to replace the soil now?

The soil gets used up after a while, but this depends on various factors.

I only want to use the soil as filter material, as a trial. Is it heavily pre-fertilized, or which nutrients does the soil absorb until it is saturated? Thank you very much in advance.

Soil can generally be used as filter material. However, you should always keep in mind that soils for planted aquariums also release larger amounts of ammonium in the beginning, which can lead to elevated nitrite levels or, in the worst case, if the pH is too high, to ammonia being formed. Both nitrite and ammonia would be harmful to the aquarium's stock and can even lead to the death of animals. The advantages as a filter medium are the temporary water-softening effect and the large surface area for bacteria to colonize. The soil should always be put into the filter in a filter bag. However, since soil does not stay permanently stable in shape, it can also cause increased particle discharge from the external filter, which then clouds the water. Soils can not only release nutrients but in some cases also bind them in large amounts. Micronutrients and other cations (potassium, calcium, magnesium) in particular are bound by soils. With some soils (mainly unfertilized soils for shrimp aquariums), phosphate binding can also be increased. All in all, we would not recommend using it in an external filter, as uncontrollable changes in the water parameters are to be expected. Reducing water hardness can be done much more simply with, e.g., an RO system, which would also always provide constant conditions. The release of humic substances and fulvic acids from the soil would be a positive property, but this can also be done in a more controllable way with suitable products.

Hi, I'd like to change the substrate in my running aquarium. Right now I only have gravel in the tank but want to switch to soil and sand. Can I use this soil for that?

In general, this soil can be used for that. However, changing the substrate in a running aquarium also comes with some risks. Soil substrates affect the water chemistry, especially at the beginning, since a lot of nutrients are released then. Existing stock could be harmed as a result. The Aquarium Soil is simply good. The water parameters stay stable with this soil for a long time, and the tank inhabitants feel very comfortable too. (read more)
